The National Children’s Council which was set up in 1990 is under the aegis of the Ministry of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare.It now operates under the National Children’s Council Act 2003.
Its main objectives are to:

Be the key Consultative and coordinating national body on all activities and issues related to children
·
Protect the rights of children , promote their interest and well-being and ensure their participation in matters of interest to them and
·
Promote activities for the welfare of children in line with the Convention on the Rights of the Child

To uphold the best interest of the Mauritian Child in line with the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

To ensure priority for Childhood Development with universal access to Health, Education and Protection
To foster the Development, Welfare, Protection and Participation of Children
POLICY, PROJECTS AND PROGRAMMES
A Rights-Based Approach Policy is implemented in the best interest of the Child
This Rights-Based Approach is coherently applied to implement activities, projects and programmes in addressing Children’s issues by:

Offering quality Early Childhood Care Education in a Day Care Centre at Baie du Tombeau
·
Enhancing the physical, mental, social, and cultural development of the whole child through child participation in the various Children’s Clubs located mainly in deprived areas
·
P
romoting the creative development of the growing child and his/her participation in a child friendly and conducive environment at the Mahebourg Child Creativity Centre
·
Preventing Child violence through the operation School Child Protection Clubs
·
Ensuring better childcare and parenting by empowering parents in “Ecole des Parents’’
