Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare

The Junior Minister
The Honourable Ms Anishta Babooram

 BIOGRAPHY

Anishta Babooram is a woman of remarkable resilience and unwavering commitment to h
er country. Born with a strong sense of purpose, she quickly emerged as a trailblazer in various sectors of public service, using her voice to advocate for the marginalized and fight for justice.

At just 20 years old, Anishta began her professional journey by being appointed as an Advisor in Public Relations at the Ministry of Women's Rights, which is now known as the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare. Her passion for serving her country propelled her forward, and two years later, she balanced a part-time position at the Mauritius High Commission in London with her pursuit of a Master's degree in International Commercial Law (LL.M).

Despite personal challenges, Anishta's dedication to serving her country never wavered. After the birth of her daughter, she was appointed as a Member of the National Human Rights Commission, serving within the National Preventive Mechanism Division. In this role, she visited detention facilities and worked to ensure that detainees' rights were respected. Anishta became a vocal advocate for the rights of those incarcerated, exposing systemic irregularities, including rampant drug trafficking within the prison system. Through the NGO she chaired, she brought attention to these issues, though her outspokenness ultimately cost her the job. Her outspoken criticism of the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a police constable in his prison cell led to threats and the termination of her position at the Commission. With no job for a year, Anishta remained undeterred. She took her case to the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner, exposing a political vendetta behind her dismissal. Ultimately, she triumphed, and the MSM government was forced to answer for its actions.

Anishta's determination to serve her community remained unbroken. After leaving an abusive marriage, she founded an online media company called Rising News, which became a platform for women and other marginalized groups to share their stories. Unfortunately, the company struggled financially and was forced to close after just two years. Yet, even in the face of setbacks, Anishta's spirit never faltered. In 2019, she was not selected by her political party to stand for election, but rather than accept this defeat, she chose to remain true to her integrity. She rejected tempting offers from rival political parties and instead rallied various groups to protest against the general elections, which were contested in court over allegations of rigging.

Anishta Babooram's resilience and commitment to justice were further demonstrated in November 2024 when she made history by becoming the first woman to top the list for L'Alliance du Changement in constituency no. 11. She now serves as Junior Minister at the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, where she had previously worked as Adviser in Public Relations, giving her the opportunity to further work for human rights. She adopts a feminist approach and makes sure that both men and women have their place in the Mauritian society. This monumental achievement not only highlighted her personal growth and determination but also solidified her position as a trailblazer in Mauritian politics.

Through all the trials and tribulations she faced, Anishta's warmth, inner strength, and unwavering determination to serve her community have been her defining characteristics. Looking ahead, Anishta remains committed to driving change and serving the people of Mauritius to the best of her abilities.
